Pre-season rivalry backgrounds[edit | edit source]
Rivals combines individuals who have had acrimonious or at least strained relations or interactions prior to the season. The following lists all the teams on Rivals, and explains why they've been paired and dubbed as "rivals." Each of the teams' history of animosity and/or open expressions of hostility are detailed.
Male teams[edit | edit source]
- Alec & Jeremy (replaced by Caleb in Episode 11): Their bad blood stems from the The Dunes, where Jeremy became fed up with Alec's poor performances in the challenges. During elimination deliberations, Jeremy berated Alec and said he was worthless for the team and should go into the elimination. Alec retaliated by stating Jeremy has done nothing but bring bad energy to the team. The fight escalated as the two came close to blows, scaring several other teammates. In the end, Alec ended up going into the elimination and being eliminated by Terrell Williams, much to the delight of Jeremy.
- Brian & Will: The two were actually friends on their original season of The Real World: Charleston, however their relationship soured during the first episode of World Tour. After Will was left out of the selection process, he shocked everyone when he selected his cast mate Brian to be his opponent. During a physical elimination, Will sent Brian home. Brian got his revenge during The Temple III when he spoke on behalf of his team and sent Will into the elimination. Will started arguing with Brian and stated that he plays the game like an idiot and will never accomplish anything. Will would be eliminated during that elimination, while Brian was eliminated shortly after.
- Buzz & Steven: Their rivalry is considered the original rivalry of the game, as they first butted heads on the inaugural season of The Real World: Long Beach. The two disagreed on all of the duties of the house including work and laundry. At the reunion, the two elaborated on their dislike for one another, where Buzz said Steven talked down to most of the women in the house, while Steven stated Buzz had an inflated ego that was unbearable. They competed together on Battle of the Seasons, but their team suffered due to their mutual hatred. They also competed against each other on several challenges, and faced off in two elimination rounds, in which Buzz won both times.
- Camden & Joe: The two butted heads on The Real World: Charlotte as they were both alpha males. The two original fought over being the leader of the house during job tasks. The friction intensified when Camden began flirting with Joe's girlfriend. When the two got drunk, they engaged in a heated brawl involving broken house items and throwing clothes and food. At the reunion, the two continued to battle with Camden claiming Joe is jealous of his popularity and the fact that he stole Joe's girlfriend. Joe dismissed the claims saying if anyone was stupid enough to like Camden that he wanted nothing to do with them.
- Darrius & Jared: The two engaged in an ugly brawl on The Real World: The Hamptons, after Jared, who actually was not a member of the cast, made an appearance to visit his girlfriend Asiah Morrison. Jared found out that Asiah had been getting intimate with Darrius and cheated on him. Enraged, Jared began throwing glasses at Darrius and also breaking tables and plants around the house. The security had to step in and relieve the situation with Jared being escorted out of the house. At the reunion, Asiah revealed Jared and her were no longer together and she and Darrius also did not make a relationship work.
- Ed & Ian: The two were originally aligned during Fresh Meat II, until Ian felt Ed was too big of a threat to keep around. Ian convinced power team Caleb Jenkins and Joslyn Fisher to put Ed and his partner Julie Owens into the exile. Ed stayed in the game, much to the dismay of Ian. Following this, Ian and his partner Chelsea Murray were members of the rival alliance to Ed. Chelsea and Ian were sent home shortly before the final, while Ed and Julie ended up finishing in second. The two competed again on The Dunes, where when Ian was eliminated, Ed was ecstatic and clapped loudly for his elimination.
- Matt & Mike: The two met on The Rodeo 2, where they were close allies. Mike ended up being eliminated in the final elimination, while Matt went on to win the game. They remained friends outside of the game, hanging out often. The two competed again together on World Tour II, where they continued an alliance. They remained safe until the final seven, when the house felt Matt's partner, Rebecca Malone, was too strong to keep around and the two of them needed to be left out of the selection process. Mike, reluctantly, went along with the house and sent his friend into the elimination, betraying Matt. Matt was sent home, and he and Mike never repaired their relationship.
- Nate & Patrick: The two were roommates on The Real World: Jacksonville, where they originally were fairly cordial with one another. When Patrick began taking a liking to cast mate Gwen Randall, Nate began trying to embarrass Patrick in front of her. Gwen never reciprocated any of Patrick's feelings and instead took a liking to Nate. Nate and Patrick continued to try and one up each other around Gwen in order to get her attention. This culminated in a heated argument that had them both separated from each other in the house, and Gwen dumping them both. They were rarely seen interacting in the house following the encounter.
- Rob & Ryan: On World Tour II, rookie Rob felt he deserved to be in the game because he was actually competing, while some people, including Ryan, were skating through and he despised their gameplay. When Rob was left out of the selection process for the second time, he called out Ryan, much to the shock of most of the cast. During a physical battle, an angry Ryan sent Rob home, and rubbed it in his face. The two again saw each other on The Dunes, where Ryan was more than willing to have Terrell Williams go against Rob in an elimination, in which Rob was sent home.
Female teams[edit | edit source]
- Aaryn & Chelsea: Tension between the two arose on Shipwrecked, when Chelsea and her friend MarissaAnne Harper were often belittled and yelled at by Aaryn's allies, Brian Snyder and Ed Slater. Aaryn often showed pleasure in how the boys treated Chelsea, and she would occasionally chime in with some insults. Chelsea saw Aaryn as a weak competitor who was being carried to the end because she was "sleeping to the top", referring to her relationship with Brian. The two competed in the final face-off, which Chelsea ended up winning, sending Aaryn home. Chelsea would go on to win the season after making a deal with Brian and Ed.
- Abby & Grace: The two have had a long-running rivalry that has dated back to the The Pit. Grace came to the defense of Eden Richards, one of Abby's Real World cast mates with whom she does not get along. The fight between the two escalated with shoes getting thrown and Abby punching the wall. Grace retaliated by rallying the team to get Abby thrown into several eliminations before she went home. The two again met on The Dungeon, both on the villains team. Abby was again at the bottom of the alliance, while Grace began a showmance with Brendan Forest. Abby tried to get Grace thrown in numerous times to no avail, and she instead was sent home. On Battle of the Seasons, when Abby's team won the challenge she campaigned hard to get Grace's team thrown in to the elimination, which she succeeded in doing. The two again saw each other on Battle of the Exes, where they had a minor scuffle on a bus ride, but it was resolved quickly.
- Alison & Erika: The friction between the two occurred on the The Real World: Jacksonville, where they often threw little digs at each other and tried to avoid each other. During the season finale, Alison's friend, Gwen Randall, poured a drink on Erika's head, a fight broke out. Alison tried to defuse the situation only to have her hair pulled by Erika. The two then got in each other's faces with Alison throwing a glass at Erika, shattering on her leg. Alison was then removed from the house, with Erika having to receive a few stitches on her leg. At the reunion, the two rarely interacted and tried to ignore each other completely.
- Amanda & Rebecca: The two had tension throughout the season on Fresh Meat II, after Amanda confronted Rebecca about her constantly voting Amanda and her partner Carmine Batista into the elimination. Rebecca responded by telling Amanda that she needs to know her place and shut up, because she is a rookie. After Rebecca won a challenge, she voted Amanda and Carmine into the exile, however, they did not have to compete due to Kaylee Stinton's ankle injury. Amanda exacted revenge when she won a challenge and voted Rebecca into the exile. Rebecca also returned, with both Amanda and Rebecca making the final, for which Amanda won and Rebecca placed fourth.
- Ariane & Farrah: The two began a rivalry on World Tour, when they had an argument on the bus ride home from a night at the club. Ariane was annoyed by Farrah's comments and the two got in each other's faces. After Ariane won a challenge, she orchestrated a plan to leave Farrah out of the selection process so she would go home. However, this plan backfired as Farrah was spared. During the next selection, Farrah was finally left out and she decided to pick Ariane as her opponent for the elimination. During a grueling physical elimination, Ariane sent Farrah home and rubbed it in her face.
- Caitlin & Jen: The tension between them occurred on Battle of the Exes, when Caitlin confronted Jen after speculation grew about Jen gossiping about her, Jen responded by telling her to chill out because Jen would never waste her breath talking about a rookie. Caitlin began shouting at Jen telling her that she is the fakest person she has ever met and she will never win a challenge. After Jen and her partner Ryan Quinn won a challenge, they sent Caitlin and her partner Jeremy MacArthur into the elimination. Caitlin and Jeremy ended up losing to David Gentry and Aaryn Grimes, much to Jen's pleasure.
- Dustin & Kandice: The two butted heads several times on The Dunes. During a physical challenge, the two collided on multiple occasions with Dustin unintentionally scratching Kandice's face. Although Dustin did not mean it, Kandice was angry and in the next round tried very hard to take Dustin down. During the next episode's elimination deliberations, Kandice was selected to go into the elimination for her team, and she wanted to go up against Dustin. During a both physical and tactical elimination, everyone was stunned when rookie Dustin prevailed and sent Kandice home.
- Julie & Sarah: The two were pitted against each other on Fresh Meat II, as they were considered the two strongest fresh meat girls. After Julie and her partner Ed Slater won the first challenge, they sent Sarah and her partner Terrell Williams into the exile, where they were sent home. The two again met on The Dunes, where they divided their challengers team into two alliances with them as the leaders. The two got into a massive shouting match where Sarah said Julie was "sleeping with the enemy", referring to her relationship with Ed. Julie would later be eliminated in the dunes, with Sarah cheering and showing great pleasure.
- Karen & Katie: Their tension mounted on Battle of the Exes, after Karen tried to vote Katie into the dome more than once. After Karen and her partner Brian Snyder won their second challenge, Karen pushed hard for Katie and her partner Tom Marini into the dome. When Katie got wind of the plan, she confronted Karen. When the two began to fight, Karen stated that Katie should go home because she is the worst player and no one would be sad to see her leave. Katie retaliated by saying Karen was not a worthy competitor and the only reason she is doing well is because of her partner, Brian.
Game summary[edit | edit source]
Challenge games[edit | edit source]
- I'm Perched: Players must stand on a perch above the water. Every ten minutes, the platform will decrease in size, making it harder for the players to stay up. If a player falls off, their team will be eliminated. The last team standing wins.
- Winners: Camden & Joe and Alison & Erika
- Stuck With Me: Players must climb a giant rock wall made entirely of velcro. To make things difficult, players must wear velcro suits that will get stuck to the wall as they ascend it. To begin, players will be stuck too their partner and then separate themselves before ascending the wall. Once to the top of the wall, players must ring a bell to lock in their time. The team with the fastest time wins.
- Winners: Alec & Caleb and Dustin & Kandice
- Launchers: Players begin seated in a giant catapult. To begin, players must drop a bucket into the water and bring it back up in order to pour it into a tube. Once a team's tube gets full, a weight will be released, activating the catapult, launching the players into the water. Then, players must swim around a buoy to the finish flag to stop their time. The team with the fastest time wins.
- Winners: Brian & Will and Aaryn & Chelsea
- Tunnel Vision: Players must jump into giant tunnels which are slowly spinning. Players must work with their partner to advance from the first tunnel to the second without falling into the water, and finally to the finish platform. If a player falls, their team is eliminated. The team that clears both tunnels and makes it to the finish platform in the fastest time wins.
- Winners: Buzz & Steven and Julie & Sarah
- Wordly Cultured: Players must race through a series of five obstacles. At the end of each obstacle, there is a word puzzle that teams must complete before moving on to the next obstacle. As the challenge progresses, the puzzles get harder to solve. The first team to complete all five obstacles and word puzzles and cross the finish line wins.
- Winners: Matt & Mike and Aaryn & Chelsea
- Flip The Script: Players must jump onto square-shaped seesaws suspended above the water. They must traverse from one seesaw to the other without falling into the water. A player may not advance to the next seesaw until their partner is on the same seesaw as them. The team that traverses all five seesaws and makes it to the finish platform in the fastest time wins.
- Winners: Brian & Will and Dustin & Kandice
- Run of the Mill: Players must run across a series of treadmills, some moving forwards and some moving backwards, to transfer balls from one basket to another. If a player falls off, they must drop the ball they currently have and restart with a new one. The team that transfers the most balls into their team basket in fifteen minutes wins.
- Winners: Alec & Caleb and Abby & Grace
- Dish Issues: Players must race across a balance beam maze to a giant table. On the table are several dishes that are covered. Players must grab a dish and bring it back to their station, which they must eat no matter what it is. Once finished, players must race back across the balance beam to place their dish in their basket. The team with the most plates in their basket at the end of thirty minutes wins.
- Winners: Camden & Joe and Alison & Erika
- Block It Out: Players must hold blocks against themselves and their teammate while making their way through a series of obstacles. After each obstacle, a team must pick up another block and press it against their team, making it harder to balance them. If a block falls, teams must restart at the beginning of that obstacle. The team that clears all eight obstacles and crosses the finish line in the fastest time wins.
- Winners: Brian & Will and Dustin & Kandice
- Web We Weave: Players begin on opposite sides of a suspended platform, with a rubber band rope connecting them. Players must weave in and out of a series of poles, passing their partner along the way, and reaching the other side of the platform. As the players progress along the platform, the rubber band will make more tension making it harder to move. Once both players reach the other side and hold the pole for three seconds their time will stop. The team with the fastest time wins.
- Winners: Ed & Ian and Dustin & Kandice
- Intersection: Players must run up and down, intersecting half-pipes that are dug several feet deep, and have to transfer colored balls to their partner's ball rack. Because the half-pipes intersect, players may collide with one another in the center. The team that transfers their five balls to their partner's rack first wins.
- Winners: Alec & Caleb and Amanda & Rebecca
- Barrier: Players must use the tools provided to break through a series of barriers to retrieve a key. Once a team breaks through all five barriers and collects all five keys, they must race to a lock box, where they will use the keys to unlock the box and grab the flag inside. They must then run the flag up a pole to stop their time. The team with the fastest time wins.
- Winners: Brian & Will and Abby & Grace

Notes[edit | edit source]
- ^1 : Alec's original partner, Jeremy, was sent home prior to the first Jungle for punching Jared. Caleb was brought in as Alec's replacement partner prior to the "Stuck With Me" challenge in Episode 2. Alec and Caleb faced off during the first male elimination on The Temple 2, which Caleb won. Alec stated that Caleb talked trash about him following the season saying that the elimination was a "walk in the park", and Alec was the worst competitor in the game.
