Pre-season rivalry backgrounds[edit | edit source]
As with the original Rivals challenge, Rivals II combines individuals who have had acrimonious or at least strained relations or interactions prior to the season. The following lists all the teams on Rivals II and explains why they've been paired and dubbed as "rivals." Each of the teams' history of animosity and/or open expressions of hostility are detailed as follows:
Male teams[edit | edit source]
- Brady & Patrick: On their original season of The Real World: Jacksonville, the two butted heads early on, with Patrick using homophobic remarks towards Brady. The two were then teammates on Battle of the Seasons II, where Patrick excoriated Brady on numerous occasions for his lack-luster performance in the challenges. Brady retaliated by actually winning an elimination round. However, when Team Jacksonville was sent to another elimination, Patrick forced Brady to go in again, and the two got into a shouting match that almost became physical. Brady was eliminated, with Patrick following the challenge afterwards.
- Brian & Luke: During Battle of the Exes II, rookie Luke and partner Cece Fox rubbed several veteran teams the wrong way by taunting them and claiming they should "join assisted living". After Brian and Jade Avery won their second challenge, Luke told other players to get Brian out because all he does is manipulate his way to the final. Brian retaliated by blasting him at the nomination ceremony and voting him into elimination, where he lost to Drew Dotson and Bianca Escobar.
- Caleb & Ian: Their animosity stems from Fresh Meat II, where Ian and partner Chelsea Murray betrayed Caleb by making a deal with the opposing alliance to stay safe and in turn sending Caleb into elimination. He returned, and then faced off against them in the following exile, where he was sent home. The two met again on Rivals, where Caleb was a replacement for Jeremy MacArthur. Ian and his alliance pushed hard for Caleb and Alec Brooks to go home each week. When Caleb heard about this, he tortured and taunted Ian for hours saying that "my personal mission is to send you home, Ian".
- Cooper & Liam: The two were roommates on The Real World: Barcelona, where they initially got along. However, their relationship soured after Liam racially offended Loren Jacobs and Cooper intervened. Cooper felt disrespected, but Liam felt the two were blowing it out of proportion. One day in the city, the two got into a shouting match at a restaurant, which quickly turned to throwing drinks and silverware. Following the incident, the two rarely interacted and kept their distance.
- David & Wade: The two met on Battle of the Seasons II, where they were in the same alliance. However, after Wade's team considered voting Team Baltimore in to face off against David's team, David was upset. David wanted him to vote in a weaker team so they could stay in the game. Wade had grown tired of David's antics and told him to win a challenge if he wanted to call the shots. Angering David, the two got in each other's faces with their teammates having to separate them. Wade's team ignored David's wishes and voted in Team Baltimore, where David was sent home.
- Eddie & Jared: The two had beef on Shipwrecked, where Jared grew tired of rookie Eddie not proving himself in eliminations. Eddie eventually went in to a face off and won, earning a key. After Eddie began eating more food than everyone else, Jared called him out and vowed to win a face off and steal his key. However, after Jared lost, Eddie and his allies voted him off over rookie Sam Willard. Jared left bitterly calling out the underserving players left in the game, with Eddie being his prime target.
- Jason & Sawyer: The two clashed a few times on Battle of the Seasons II. During a physical challenge, Jason targeted Sawyer in order to stay out of last place. Sawyer grew angry and the two battled hard, making for one of the most grueling challenges ever. After Jason's team came in last at the next challenge, they had to select two of their four members to go into elimination. However, they could not come to a decision, and therefore the power team chose for them. In this case, Sawyer's team was the power team and he took pleasure in being the one to announce Jason was going in, where he was subsequently eliminated.
- Joe & Justin: On Battle of the Exes II, the two formed a power alliance between their two teams early on. However, Justin and partner Alison Isaacson grew fearful after Joe began cozying up to Tara Bryan. After winning a challenge and fearing that Joe would choose Tara over him, Justin convinced Alison that they should take him out. Alison was nervous to go against one of their only allies, however, Justin stuck to his guns. In the end, they followed through, stunning Joe and the rest of the house. Joe and Justin then verbal attacked one another with Joe stating Justin would not be here without him. Joe was then sent home by Tara and her partner Phil Peyton.
- Jon & Phil: The two were rivals during The Real World: Columbus, where they both fought over the same girl. Phil initially had feelings for her, but Jon eventually stole her away from him. One evening, when Jon brought her over to the house, Phil began bothering the two of them, giving them no alone time. The next day, Jon dumped all of Phil's beer out and throw his mattress in the dumpster. This erupted a fight between the two of them with several things broken in the house. At the reunion, Jon said Phil was just mad and that Tara Bryan was his "second choice", while Phil said Jon is an egotistical maniac and should get help.
Female teams[edit | edit source]
- Alison & Jen: The two initially fought on Rivals, after Jen and partner Caitlin Oswald voted Buzz Allen and Steven Henry into elimination after they had just saved them the week prior. Alison lambasted Jen calling her a "manipulative bitch" that no one should trust moving forward. The two met again on Battle of the Exes II, where Jen voted Alison and Justin Gould into elimination. Alison claimed Jen was afraid to go up against her, to which Jen agreed. Eventually, the two squared off in the "Spun Out" dome, where Alison and Justin won, crushing Jen, serving her her ninth loss.
- Ariane & Bridget: Their rivalry began on The Temple 2, during the final elimination deliberation where they fought over which one of them should go into the final elimination. They both made the final and won. Their main tension was on World Tour II, where they were both apart of the veteran alliance. However, Ariane convinced Aaryn Grimes to call Bridget into elimination against her, however, Bridget sent her home. The two then bickered on a bus ride, which cracked the veteran alliance in half. Eventually, Ariane was left out of the selection process, and selected Bridget to go against her. In an intense battle, Bridget was victorious, sending Ariane home.
- Bianca & Cece: The two clashed on Battle of the Exes II after Bianca came in last, and pushed power couple Joe Patrick and Farrah Armstrong to vote in Cece and partner Luke Baldwin. After the power couple decided against it, Cece called Bianca out in front of the entire house saying she was a "fake bitch" and that she would love to take her down in any elimination. Her wish came true after Bianca came in last again and Cece and Luke were voted in. During the physical dome, Bianca beat Cece in round one, while Luke beat Bianca's partner Drew Dotson in round two. In the tiebreaker, Bianca was victorious once again, sending Cece home and rubbing it in her face.
- Brie & Nikki: The two were on the Fresh Meat team on Battle of the Seasons II, where they immediately butted heads. Brie was frustrated by Nikki's hot head personality, while Nikki hated that Brie felt like the boss of the team. After losing the first challenge, they clashed over which one of them should go into elimination. In the end, Nikki went in and returned. After losing another challenge, the two fought over who was weaker, with Brie citing Nikki's inability to work with a team while Nikki said Brie was the reason they lose every time. The team did not come to a decision, so the power team chose for them, choosing Brie and subsequently sending her home.
- Chloe & Maddie: The two were rivals on The Real World: Barcelona, where they constantly made nasty remarks towards one another. While out one night, Maddie made several comments about Chloe's slutty outfit and dancing. When Chloe caught wind of the comments, she confronted Maddie. Chloe called Maddie a "wannabe goody goody" and jealous of her confidence. Maddie responded by saying Chloe was insecure and being a slut to cope. The fight escalated and the two began fighting with each of them pulling each other's hair. The two were eventually separated and spent the night in hotels.
- Gwen & Kacey: The two competed on Battle of the Seasons II, where they were initially aligned. However, their relationship turned hostile after Kacey became suspicious of Gwen's motives when Gwen began getting close to Kacey's teammate Cody Carter. After Kacey's team came in last, they sold out their allies, which eventually was revealed to the rest of the house, erupting in an argument. Kacey said Gwen was using Cody to stay safe, while Gwen claimed Kacey was a backstabbing, conniving player and she and her team should not be trusted.
- Haley & Zoe: The two butted heads on Battle of the Seasons II, after Zoe felt Haley was incredibly loud and irritating. When she heard about this, Haley went off on Zoe saying she was the weakest player in the house. Zoe retorted by saying no one liked Haley and she should go home. Haley said Zoe should watch out because she cannot fight and she would knock her out. When Team Baltimore won a challenge, Zoe took pride in being the one to vote in Haley's team, however, Haley did not go into elimination. Eventually, Haley and Zoe faced off in elimination, where Haley and David Gentry sent Zoe and Victor Torres home.
- Lacey & Tara: Their animosity originated on Battle of the Exes II, where Tara, in order to save her allies, convinced her showmance Joe Patrick to vote Lacey and partner Gustavo Espinoza into the dome. When she heard, Lacey was furious and confronted Tara. When confronted, Tara said she could not trust Lacey because she was fake, while Lacey said Tara was stirring the pot for no reason. Ultimately, Lacey was sent in and subsequently eliminated, much to Tara's delight.
- Laura & Santana (replaced by Sarah in Episode 21): The two started drama on Battle of the Seasons II, after Laura pushed hard for Santana's team to go into elimination against her team. Santana then confronted Laura, which led to a shouting match. Laura said Santana was a liar and needed to go home, while Santana said Laura talks crap about everyone and is so fake. Ultimately, both of them made the final, where Santana placed second and Laura placed third.
Game summary[edit | edit source]
Challenge games[edit | edit source]
- Leapers: Teams are on a platform over the water and tied together at the waist. When Tyson Kidd blows the horn, the players must jump to another platform. Those that fall are eliminated. This is performed in heats, and in each successive heat, the platform is pulled back by one foot. The last male and female teams remaining win, while the first male team to fall into the water is automatically sent to the Jungle.
- Winners: Joe & Justin and Alison & Jen
- Beach Please: Played on an obstacle course along the beach, teams must complete a series of obstacles, collecting number tiles at the end of each one. Once to the end, players must use the number tiles to solve a combination lock. Once the lock is opened, teams must raise their team flag up their flag pole. The first teams to raise their flags win, while the last-place female team is automatically sent to the Jungle.
- Winners: Joe & Justin and Gwen & Kacey
- To The Point: Teams must ascend and descend a large incline suspended above the water. Working with their teammate, players must use a rope to balance each other's weight in order get to the bottom of the incline, where they must grab a ball and then deposit it on the other side. The teams that deposit the most balls in the fastest time win, while the male team who deposits the fewest balls is automatically sent to the Jungle.
- Winners: Joe & Justin and Lacey & Tara
- Table Turner: Players must advance from one end of a platform to another that is suspended high above water. Each player has to jump onto a series of tables that are hanging from the base of the platform. To makes things more difficult, each table is spinning. The teams that advance the furthest in the fastest time win, while the female team who falls off the earliest is automatically sent to the Jungle.
- Winners: Joe & Justin and Ariane & Bridget
- Thick of It: Players have to advance through a maze in the sand consisting of numerous bamboo poles, with each player tied together by their waists to a 25-foot bamboo pole. This pole is connected to a sliding hub, which allows players to shorten or lengthen their portion of the pole to maneuver through the maze. The teams that make it to the end of the maze in the fastest time wins, while the last-place male team is automatically sent to the Jungle.
- Winners: Jon & Phil and Bianca & Cece
- Log Off: Players must advance from one end of a platform to another that is suspended high above water. Each player has to jump onto a series of log-shaped stumps. As the players advance, the stumps get smaller and smaller, making it harder to balance. The teams that advance the furthest in the fastest time win, while the female team who falls off the earliest is automatically sent to the Jungle.
- Winners: Caleb & Ian and Alison & Jen
- Tramps and Thieves: Players must run down a long runway and then jump on a trampoline, attempting to grab a bar to get further down the course. They must then swim around a flag and touch a buoy to stop their time. In addition, players may grab flags on the runway and in the air, which provide deductions to their overall times. The teams with the fastest time win, while the last-place male team is automatically sent to The Jungle.
- Winners: Caleb & Ian and Laura & Sarah
- En Garde: Players are suspended above the water standing on swords. Tyson Kidd will then ask players a series of questions that their partner already answered. If they answer incorrectly, their swords will move up. After two incorrect answers, teams will be pushed off of their swords and eliminated. The last teams standing win, while the first female team to be eliminated is automatically sent to the Jungle.
- Winners: David & Wade and Alison & Jen
- Stompede: Players must work together and use a plank of wood to catapult five balls into specific baskets. A team is disqualified if they do not score all five baskets within a 20-minute time limit. The teams with the fastest time win, while the last-place male team is automatically sent to the Jungle.
- Winners: Cooper & Liam and Ariane & Bridget
- Austria and Hungry: Players must swim out to a tower in the water, while navigating through a series of obstacles along the way. Once to the tower, teams must eat a specific food item. Once finished, they must race up to the next level and eat again. Once they complete all three levels, they must swim back through the obstacles and raise the flag on shore. The teams that raise their flag first win, while the last-place female is automatically sent to the Jungle.
- Winners: Cooper & Liam and Bianca & Cece
- Mud Sling: Players must run down a giant half-pipe to the center of a mud pit. In the center, there are several medicine balls. Players must grab a medicine ball and race back to place it on their mat. In each round, there are less balls than players. Depending upon the round in which a player is eliminated, they will gain a certain point value. The teams with the most points win, while the male team with the fewest points is automatically sent to the Jungle.
- Winners: Caleb & Ian and Alison & Jen
- Remembrance: Players must swim through a series of obstacles in the water to a platform. Once to the platform, teams must memorize a series of colored tiles. Then, they must swim back through the obstacles and replicate the tiles on their board back on the beach. The first team to correctly replicate the tiles wins, and earn a guaranteed spot in the final challenge.
- Winners: Laura & Sarah2
Jungle games[edit | edit source]
- Dreadmill: Players must run on a treadmill, with obstacles they must avoid. As the challenge progresses, the treadmill will incline, making it harder to stay on. The treadmill also goes in both directions. The last player standing wins the elimination for their team.
- Played by: Jason & Sawyer vs. Eddie & Jared, Bianca & Cece vs. Lacey & Tara, Cooper & Liam vs. Brady & Patrick
- Jungle Rumble: Players must race across a giant balance beam suspended in the middle of the jungle. They must maneuver around their teammate and place a diamond on their rack. If a team falls off, they must go back to the start. The first team to place 10 gems wins.
- Played by: Laura & Sarah vs. Chloe & Maddie, David & Wade vs. Joe & Justin, Bianca & Cece vs. Ariane & Bridget
- Colors of the Wheel: Players must use giant boxes to build a staircase to retrieve a set of keys. Then, they must use the keys to unlock their puzzle, where they must move balls in a giant wheel to line up the corresponding colors in the chute. The first team to solve the puzzle wins.
- Played by: Brady & Patrick vs. Jason & Sawyer, Ariane & Bridget vs. Haley & Zoe, Laura & Sarah vs. Gwen & Kacey
- Dig In: Players must run to a lane and dig for a bag. Once they grab the bag, the opposing players must attempt to take the bag anyway they can. First player to have one hand on the bag and touch their team's mat scores a point. The first team to score 3 points wins.
- Played by: Laura & Sarah vs. Brie & Nikki, Cooper & Liam vs. Jon & Phil, Caleb & Ian vs. David & Wade

Notes[edit | edit source]
- ^1 : Laura's original partner, Santana, withdrew from the game prior to the first Jungle after she got into a verbal argument with Alison and Cece and became fed up with the conditions in the house. Sarah was brought in as Laura's replacement partner prior to the "Beach Please" challenge in Episode 2. Laura stated that she received several nasty tweets from Sarah, after Laura made the final of Battle of the Seasons II, where she stated that Laura was carried to the end by Eddie and Team Dallas and did not deserve to be there.
- ^2 : Only the female teams competed in the "Remembrance" challenge as all of the remaining guys teams had already advanced to the finale.
